Flight Cancellations Soar: 10% Cut at 40 U.S. Airports Imminent
UPDATE: 10% of flights are set to be cancelled at 40 U.S. airports starting this Friday, November 7, unless the ongoing government shutdown is resolved. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy confirmed this alarming decision, which comes as air travel chaos escalates nationwide.
The shutdown’s impact on air travel is rapidly worsening, with about 5,000 flights delayed just last Sunday. This unprecedented move signals a potential logistical disaster for travelers, as overworked air traffic controllers struggle to manage air traffic without pay, leading to significant staffing shortages.
Air traffic controllers, essential for ensuring flight safety, are currently working without compensation and facing “immense stress and fatigue,” according to the FAA. Reports indicate that many are calling in sick to find alternative income, further exacerbating the crisis. Just yesterday, controllers received their second pay stub with no funds, intensifying concerns about their ability to perform their critical roles effectively.
With Thanksgiving just 21 days away, the upcoming holiday travel season is at risk. Last year, approximately 20 million Americans flew during this period, and airlines are bracing for a record travel season. However, if the shutdown continues, recovery from these disruptions will take weeks, according to Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
The cancellations will not be strategically coordinated to minimize traveler impact but are instead focused on relieving pressure on federal employees. This decision is expected to create a ripple effect, causing further delays and missed connections across the aviation network.
Adding to the turmoil, TSA workers are similarly affected by the lack of pay, leading to long security checkpoint lines—reportedly lasting up to four-and-a-half hours in some instances. As the holiday season approaches, travelers face not only flight cancellations but also heightened security delays, compounding the stress of air travel.
Duffy warned of potential “mass chaos” at airports, and with snowy weather conditions forecasted, the situation could deteriorate even further. Travelers are urged to stay informed and prepare for significant disruptions in the coming days.
As this story develops, it remains crucial for travelers to monitor updates closely. The impact of these cancellations and delays could be felt widely, affecting millions during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Stay tuned for further updates as this urgent situation unfolds.
