UPDATE: A 3-year-old boy from Morgan Hill is fighting for his life after a tabletop fire pit explosion on October 4, 2023, left him with severe burns. Sebastian Reynoso was preparing to make s’mores with his family when flames erupted from the device, causing second- and third-degree burns over approximately 15 percent of his body.

Sebastian has spent over a month in intensive care, undergoing six surgeries to treat his burns and a narrowed airway. His father, Omar Reynoso, revealed that Sebastian has faced numerous challenges, including drug withdrawals and the mental strain of his traumatic experience. “His future is kind of unknown,” said Omar. “I don’t wish this on anybody, even my worst enemy.”

The fire pit involved in the incident, manufactured by Rozato, retails for $14.99 and is fueled by alcohol or bioethanol. Despite a previous warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission about the dangers of such products, the family was unaware of any safety recalls at the time of the explosion. The Commission had previously linked these devices to at least 60 injuries and two deaths since 2019.

Omar, a pilot, received the devastating news while in Phoenix, Arizona. “That was one of the hardest days of my life,” he recalled, emphasizing the emotional toll of being far from his family during this crisis. Sebastian was initially treated at St. Louise Regional Hospital before being transferred to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for more specialized care.

Sebastian’s condition was dire; he required intubation due to airway swelling caused by the burns. After three weeks, doctors opted for a tracheostomy to alleviate the pressure. As his recovery continues, he faces more surgeries, rehabilitation, and potentially costly laser treatments to improve the appearance of his scars.

This heartbreaking situation has drawn support from the community, with a GoFundMe campaign initiated by Sebastian’s aunt raising over $47,000 to cover medical expenses. The family’s goal is $200,000 to address gaps in insurance coverage, as they face significant out-of-pocket costs, including a $14,000 ambulance bill, of which only $3,000 will be covered.

“We are so thankful,” Omar expressed, reflecting on the overwhelming community response. “I never thought the community would step in and help out.”

While the family has not yet decided on a legal course of action against Rozato, the focus remains on Sebastian’s recovery. The emotional toll on the family is immense, as they navigate the complexities of his treatment and the psychological effects of his injuries. “He looks at his hands and seems really sad,” Omar noted, emphasizing the need for emotional and psychological support alongside physical healing.

Sebastian’s parents are steadfast in their commitment to his recovery. “We don’t care what the cost is; we’ll go into debt for our lives,” Omar said. “Whatever needs to be done, we’re going to do it for him.”

As the family continues to face this challenge, they remain hopeful for Sebastian’s future and appreciate the outpouring of love and support from their community. The road ahead is long, but they are determined to help their son heal both physically and emotionally.

Stay tuned for updates on Sebastian’s recovery and any new developments regarding the safety of products like the Rozato fire pit.
