UPDATE: Safeway has announced the permanent closure of its grocery store located at 231 Jackson St., Hayward, set for late February 2024. This decision, confirmed by the company to KRON4 News, comes as part of a strategic shift following the end of the store’s lease.

Safeway stated, “We have been proud to serve the Jackson Triangle neighborhood over the years, and this decision was not made lightly.” The company is transferring employees to other locations within the region in accordance with its collective bargaining agreements.

The closure marks another significant move for Safeway, which has seen a series of store shutdowns across the Bay Area. However, the grocery chain reassured customers that the nearby Hayward store at 22280 Foothill Blvd. will remain operational, offering the same products, including a Starbucks kiosk and pharmacy.

This development raises concerns about the impact on the local community, as residents will need to adjust their shopping habits. The decision highlights ongoing changes in the retail landscape, reflecting broader trends affecting grocery stores nationwide.

As Safeway navigates these challenges, the company emphasizes its commitment to serving the Hayward community through the Foothill Blvd location. Residents are encouraged to visit the remaining store for their grocery needs.
