Texas Advances Major Highway Projects Across Key Regions
Texas has made significant strides in highway infrastructure development this October, with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) achieving crucial milestones across multiple projects. Among the highlights is the $1.5 billion I-35 NEX Central Project in San Antonio, which is now 60% complete. This initiative aims to enhance mobility and reduce travel times significantly in the region.
In Corpus Christi, the Harbor Bridge saw a notable change on October 30, 2023, when its center span was lowered after more than sixty years of service. This event was met with a mixture of nostalgia and progress as residents bid farewell to the bridge, a long-standing community landmark. The dismantling of the central span marks a pivotal moment in the transformation of the area’s infrastructure.
Cedar Creek also witnessed progress with the groundbreaking of the $58.5 million SH 71 overpass project at Tucker Hill Lane. This project is designed to eliminate traffic signals along State Highway 71, facilitating uninterrupted travel between Austin and Houston. With an anticipated completion date set for fall 2028, the initiative promises to improve both travel times and safety features, including new frontage roads and designated paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
Expanding Connectivity Across Texas
In League City, TxDOT officials convened to discuss the Grand Parkway Section B-1 expansion, which includes a new 14-mile toll road and direct connectors to I-45 and SH 35. The design phase for this $1.96 billion project is scheduled to commence in 2026, with construction expected to begin in 2027. This expansion is anticipated to significantly improve the existing infrastructure and provide new roadways for the growing population.
Ongoing projects such as My35 South and Business 77 in Waco, along with the 19th Street project in Lubbock, are also making steady progress. The Waco initiative is focused on creating a more pedestrian-friendly corridor, promoting safer and more accessible travel for residents. Meanwhile, Lubbock’s 19th Street improvements are nearing completion, with final touches including sidewalks and enhanced lighting expected by the end of this year. This project aims to upgrade one of the city’s vital routes, ensuring more efficient commutes for local drivers.
These developments reflect a broader trend of investment in Texas’ transportation infrastructure, addressing the needs of an expanding population while enhancing safety and connectivity across the state. As projects continue to unfold, the impact on local communities and traffic dynamics will be closely monitored.
