CT Medical Examiner Rules Jacqueline Torres’ Death a Homicide
UPDATE: The Chief State Medical Examiner in Connecticut has confirmed that the death of 11-year-old Jacqueline “Mimi” Torres is a homicide resulting from fatal child abuse and starvation. This shocking ruling follows the discovery of her remains, which weighed just 27 pounds, in a storage tote outside an abandoned home in New Britain on October 8, 2023.
Authorities report that Mimi’s body was found curled up in the fetal position, along with a laundry basket and bedding. Disturbingly, investigators noted that the remains had a powdery substance with a strong ammonia odor, adding to the tragic details of her death.
Police have charged Mimi’s mother, Karla Garcia (29), her boyfriend Jonatan Nanita (30), and her sister Jackelyn Garcia (28) in connection with this horrific case. Both Karla Garcia and Jonatan Nanita face charges of murder with special circumstances, conspiracy to commit murder, and intentional cruelty to a child. Jackelyn Garcia is charged with intentional cruelty to a child under 19 years old, unlawful restraint, and risk of injury to a minor.
According to arrest warrant affidavits, the investigation revealed that Karla Garcia and Nanita each blamed the other for Mimi’s death during police interviews. The evidence suggests that the young girl suffered prolonged abuse, reportedly being zip-tied in a corner and left to urinate and defecate on herself for extended periods. Investigators believe she was regularly denied food, particularly in the two weeks leading up to her death.
Mimi was reportedly homeschooled, which raises further questions about her care and well-being. The Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) has released a statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing condolences to Mimi’s family and community. DCF spokesperson Ken Mysogland described the situation as “an unspeakable tragedy” and stated that they have previously issued statements regarding their involvement with the family.
As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the horrifying details of this case. Authorities are continuing to gather information, and the suspects are expected to face court proceedings in the coming weeks.
This devastating incident highlights the urgent need for child welfare protections and raises awareness about the signs of abuse that often go unnoticed. As the legal process continues, many are left wondering what further revelations may come to light in this tragic case.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops, as it remains a crucial matter impacting families and communities across the state.
