Metro Restaurants Provide Free Meals Amid SNAP Shutdown Crisis
UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown halts SNAP benefits for thousands of families in Oklahoma, local restaurants are urgently stepping in to provide support. Several metro eateries, including Taquitos Feliz, are offering free meals to families affected by the cut-off, highlighting a community-driven response to the crisis.
Since the beginning of July, SNAP benefits have been suspended, leaving many parents struggling to feed their children. In a remarkable show of solidarity, Taquitos Feliz on NW 23rd Street and MacArthur Blvd. has reported a surge in customers, welcoming over 100 new visitors this week alone. Owner Roberto Brambila stated, “I like to help them out whenever I can. This was a really good opportunity for us to do something nice.”
The restaurant is offering a full meal for free to anyone who enters with an EBT card and at least one child. Options include tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, with Brambila noting the generous initiative comes at a financial cost to him. “No, not in this case,” he remarked when asked if the increase in business was profitable, emphasizing his commitment to helping the community.
In a touching display of gratitude, regular customer Gil Torres visited an ATM to donate cash to Brambila, stating, “Thank you for what you’re doing.” This act of kindness underscores a powerful message amidst the political turmoil: “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human,” Torres added.
Other local establishments are joining the cause as well. Taco Casa locations throughout the metro are also providing free meals for children who present an EBT card at the register. Additionally, Oliver’s Pizzeria is set to give away free large one-topping pizzas this coming Monday, July 10, between 2 PM and 6 PM to anyone with a valid SNAP or EBT card.
As Oklahoma City families face the challenges of the shutdown, these restaurants exemplify the spirit of community resilience and support. Their actions serve as a reminder that during times of adversity, humanity can shine through, providing essential help to those in need.
Residents are encouraged to spread the word about these initiatives to ensure that families are aware of the available resources. With the ongoing situation, more developments are expected, and local businesses are stepping up to make a difference.
