UPDATE: As Thanksgiving approaches on November 23, 2023, food safety experts urge consumers to consider the best time to buy their turkey. With the holiday just weeks away, the Minnesota Department of Health has issued vital guidance on turkey purchasing and thawing methods that everyone needs to know NOW.

For those opting for a fresh turkey, experts recommend waiting until just **one or two days before** Thanksgiving to make your purchase. During this short window, store it in the refrigerator on a tray to catch any juices. If you prefer a frozen turkey, the good news is that you can buy it anytime—just ensure you allocate enough time for thawing.

Frozen turkeys can remain in the freezer **indefinitely**, but to maintain the best quality and taste, it’s advised to cook them within **one year**. This means savvy shoppers can buy a turkey after Thanksgiving and store it for next year’s feast!

When it’s time to thaw, safety is paramount. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warns against thawing your turkey on the countertop for extended periods. Any frozen meat left out for more than **two hours** risks entering the “Danger Zone”—between **40 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit**—where harmful bacteria thrive.

Instead, the FSIS recommends three safe thawing methods: in the refrigerator, in cold water, or using a microwave. The size of your turkey will dictate how long it takes to thaw, so plan ahead.

Did you forget to thaw? Don’t panic! The FSIS states that you can still cook a frozen turkey, but it will take at least **50% longer** than a thawed one.

As consumers prepare for Thanksgiving, it’s essential to be informed and proactive. Officials stress the importance of food safety, ensuring that families can enjoy their holiday meals without worry.

Stay tuned for more updates as the holiday approaches, and make sure you’re ready for the big day!
