The Maritime Museum of San Diego is set to celebrate the 162nd birthday of the legendary sailing vessel, Star of India, on November 14, 2025. This historic ship, recognized as the world’s oldest active sailing ship, will be open for a complimentary visit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to Museum members, volunteers, and the general public.

Visitors can enjoy free dockside entry to the Star of India, which will also feature complimentary birthday cake served by Museum volunteers starting at noon, while supplies last. This offer is exclusive to walk-up guests. While donations are encouraged to support the ongoing preservation of the vessel, attendees have the option to upgrade to a general admission ticket. This ticket allows access to the entire fleet and exhibits of the Maritime Museum, as well as galleries located below deck that are not visible from the embarcadero.

Built in 1863, the Star of India has an impressive history, having circumnavigated the globe twenty-one times. Originally named Euterpe after the Greek goddess of music and poetry, the ship arrived in San Diego in 1927. Following years of restoration, the Maritime Museum began significant renovations in 1951, and it has since become a focal point for maritime history and education in the region.

The 501 nonprofit Maritime Museum of San Diego relies heavily on the support of its members, volunteers, and visitors to maintain its collection of historic vessels and maritime exhibits. The Museum is renowned as one of the top attractions in the country, offering a range of experiences including self-guided and docent-led tours, tall ship charters, and historic bay cruises.

General admission tickets are priced at $28 for adults, $20 for seniors and military personnel, and $15 for youth aged 6 to 17. Children under the age of five can enter for free. Tickets are available for advance purchase online or at the Maritime Museum’s ticket booth located at Star of India Wharf, 1492 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101-3309.

The Museum operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last guest entry at 4 p.m. This special celebration not only honors the Star of India but also highlights the Museum’s commitment to maritime heritage and education, engaging visitors with the rich history of seafaring.
