Oscar Isaac Slams Disney, Questions Future of Star Wars Role
UPDATE: Oscar Isaac has expressed strong reservations about returning to the Star Wars franchise, criticizing Disney’s recent actions and calling for the studio to uphold democratic values. In a revealing interview with GQ Magazine published on September 25, 2023, Isaac stated, “Right now I’m not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.”
This statement comes in the wake of ABC suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live! following controversial comments made by Kimmel regarding the shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk. The suspension, which ignited significant public backlash, has raised questions about artistic freedom and corporate censorship. Isaac noted the timing of his remarks, indicating they were made just two days after Kimmel’s suspension was announced.
The Star Wars actor, who portrayed Poe Dameron in the franchise’s sequel trilogy, has previously been vocal about his mixed feelings towards blockbuster films. Reflecting on his earlier comments about only returning to the franchise “if I needed another house,” Isaac admitted to GQ, “That was a real likable quote. Jesus Christ.” He emphasized that his true passion lies in making “handmade movies” with inspiring collaborators.
Isaac’s remarks have sparked discussions among fans and industry insiders alike, particularly concerning the future of his character in potential upcoming projects. The three Star Wars films starring Isaac—The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker—collectively grossed over $4.4 billion worldwide, cementing his role as a significant figure in the franchise.
Additionally, the actor is currently starring in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein, which is streaming on Netflix, and he is set to lead season two of Beef on the same platform.
As the entertainment world reacts to Isaac’s comments, fans are left wondering what this means for Disney’s plans for Poe Dameron and the future of the Star Wars saga. Will Disney address these concerns and work towards an environment that aligns with Isaac’s vision? The conversation continues, and all eyes are on the studio as it navigates this turbulent moment in its history.
