Cubs Legend Kyle Hendricks Announces Retirement After 12 Seasons
BREAKING: Chicago Cubs star pitcher Kyle Hendricks has officially announced his retirement after an illustrious 12-year Major League Baseball career. The 35-year-old righty, who spent most of his career with the Cubs, made the announcement today, signaling the end of an era for fans and teammates alike.
Hendricks, affectionately known as “The Professor,” leaves behind a legacy that includes a World Series championship in 2016 and an ERA title. He played his final season with the Los Angeles Angels, finishing with an 8-10 record and a 4.76 ERA.
Originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2011, Hendricks was acquired by the Cubs the following year. He made his MLB debut in 2014, quickly establishing himself as a key player in the rotation with a remarkable 2.46 ERA in his first 13 starts. His most notable season came in 2016, where he achieved a stunning 2.13 ERA—the lowest in baseball that year—and went on to outduel Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the NLCS Game 6, propelling the Cubs to their first pennant since 1945.
Hendricks’ farewell at Wrigley Field last season was nothing short of spectacular. He received a heartfelt curtain call after pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings against the Cincinnati Reds, marking a fitting end to his Cubs tenure before entering free agency. Teammate Ian Happ praised Hendricks, stating, “He’s a perfect example of what it means to be a Chicago Cub,” highlighting both his on-field accomplishments and his character.
As he transitions from the diamond, Hendricks has expressed no immediate plans to pursue coaching or front office roles. Instead, he aims to focus on family and enjoy life after baseball.
This announcement comes as a shock to many fans who have watched Hendricks’ journey from a promising rookie to a beloved team leader. His mastery of the game, despite never exceeding 90 mph on his fastball, has inspired countless young pitchers and solidified his status as one of the game’s great strategists.
The baseball community is sure to feel the impact of Hendricks’ retirement, as he leaves behind not just statistics, but a profound legacy of mentorship and excellence. As the news circulates, fans and players alike will reflect on his contributions to the game, and his presence will be sorely missed in the upcoming seasons.
Stay tuned for more updates on Hendricks’ next steps and how the Cubs plan to fill the void left by this monumental player.
