Typhoid Mary Dies: A Look Back on November 11, 1938
UPDATE: On this day, November 11, we mark the death of infamous disease carrier Mary Mallon, known as “Typhoid Mary,” who passed away on November 11, 1938, at the age of 69. Her life ended under the shadow of public fear and misunderstanding, after spending 23 years in mandatory quarantine on North Brother Island, located in New York’s East River.
Mallon, an Irish-born cook, was blamed for the deaths of three individuals due to her role as a carrier of typhoid fever, a devastating bacterial infection. Her case sparked a national debate about public health and individual rights during a time when medical knowledge was still evolving. This anniversary serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding disease and social responsibility.
Additionally, today is Veterans Day, a time to remember and honor those who have served in the military. Significant events have also unfolded on this date throughout history, including the signing of the Mayflower Compact in 1620, establishing self-governance for the Pilgrims in Massachusetts.
In 1918, the world witnessed the end of World War I, marked by an armistice signed in a railroad car in the Forest of Compiègne, France. This day also saw the interment of an unidentified American service member at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1921, a ceremony led by President Warren G. Harding.
Fast forward to recent history, on this day in 2020, Georgia Secretary of State announced an audit of presidential election results, revealing a tight race where Joe Biden led Donald Trump by just 14,000 votes out of nearly 5 million counted. This audit would ultimately affirm Biden’s victory.
In 2022, the cryptocurrency world was shaken when Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Just last month, Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud and conspiracy, showcasing the volatile nature of modern finance.
As we reflect on these impactful moments in history, today also marks the birthdays of notable figures including Mutt Lange, who turns 77, and Stanley Tucci, celebrating his 65th year.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to honor the legacies of those who have shaped history on this significant day.
