WSU Alumnus Joshua Neumiller Receives Top Honor for Diabetes Care
Joshua Neumiller, an alumnus of Washington State University (WSU), has been recognized with the prestigious WSU Alumni Achievement Award for his transformative contributions to diabetes care on a global scale. This honor highlights Neumiller’s significant influence on healthcare practices, affecting millions of individuals living with diabetes.
Impact on Diabetes Care Worldwide
Neumiller’s journey began at WSU, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2005. Nearly two decades later, his work has evolved from classrooms in Spokane to clinical practices worldwide. As a past chair of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) committee responsible for updating the Standards of Care, Neumiller played a crucial role in shaping the guidelines that inform diabetes management for approximately 643 million adults and nearly 2 million young individuals globally.
According to Blair Rossow, vice president of pharmacy operations at CHAS Health, “Dr. Neumiller has dedicated his career to improving outcomes for high-risk patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease, especially during critical transitions in care.” His work has not only improved patient outcomes but has also established new benchmarks for compassionate, patient-centered care.
A Legacy of Innovation and Education
After completing both his bachelor’s and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees at WSU, Neumiller pursued advanced training in geriatrics and diabetology. He joined the WSU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2008, where he quickly gained recognition as an exceptional educator, researcher, and mentor. His passion for diabetes care began during his early career with Elder Services of Spokane, where he provided in-home education to help older adults manage their condition and maintain independence.
Throughout his career, Neumiller has authored or co-authored over 130 research publications and delivered more than 100 invited lectures at various conferences, both regional and international. His students describe him as both knowledgeable and compassionate, expecting excellence while fostering a supportive learning environment.
Neumiller’s achievements reflect WSU’s longstanding tradition of innovation in diabetes care. This legacy began with pioneers like R. Keith Campbell, who received the Alumni Achievement Award in 1999 for his efforts in advancing diabetes education globally. Neumiller continues this tradition by positioning WSU as a national leader in training pharmacists to improve lives affected by chronic conditions like diabetes.
For Neumiller, receiving the WSU Alumni Achievement Award on November 20, 2023, signifies more than recognition of past accomplishments; it embodies the potential of education and purpose to change healthcare standards for millions. The award ceremony will take place at the Ruby River Hotel Conference Room from 18:00 to 20:00, with online registration available for interested attendees.
