True North Theatre’s ‘Cosmogenesis’ Explores Identity and Cosmos
A new theatrical production, ‘Cosmogenesis: The Story of Us’, is captivating audiences at the Versant Power Astronomy Center & Maynard Planetarium at the University of Maine. This world premiere, presented by the True North Theatre, delves into themes of identity and the cosmos through the story of a young woman named Lotus, portrayed by Sarah Chang.
Lotus is on a quest for self-discovery, grappling with her origins and her birth mother, who left China for Kazakhstan and placed her in an orphanage. Adopted by a white American couple, her journey is complicated by her adoptive mother’s fears about the repercussions of this search on their relationship. The narrative not only explores personal identity but also reflects universal questions about belonging in the vastness of the universe.
Innovative Multimedia Experience
Under the creative direction of Rebecca-Sophia Strong, who serves as the creator, playwright, and executive producer, the production stands out as a multimedia extravaganza. It combines live performances with film, music, and stunning visual projections that transform the planetarium into an immersive storytelling environment. Strong’s vision is to inspire a sense of wonder and aliveness, as she notes in the program: “How might we generate solutions that nourish the children of all species for the next thousand years?”
The production builds on True North Theatre’s previous collaboration with the planetarium, which featured Lauren Gunderson’s ‘Silent Sky’ in March 2023. While that earlier work used simpler projections, ‘Cosmogenesis’ elevates the experience, as it employs advanced cinematic techniques to create a stunning visual narrative.
Diverse Cast and Engaging Direction
The cast of ‘Cosmogenesis’ reflects a commitment to diversity, with actors from varied backgrounds, including two members of the Penobscot Nation and one actor of Black descent. Director Angela Bonacasa has assembled a close-knit ensemble of ten actors, creating a dynamic atmosphere in the intimate setting of the planetarium.
One notable addition to the narrative is a Penobscot origin story featuring Gluskabe, enriching the local context and connecting the audience to the cultural heritage of the region. Throughout the performance, Chang delivers a poignant portrayal of Lotus, navigating her complex emotions and her place in the universe.
Supporting characters, including fellow students Alan (played by Adrian Sockalexis), Theo (played by Josh Wescoat), Ruth (played by Nina Paradzick), and J. Lewis (played by Patrick “Patty” Morris), along with engaging professors Sophia (played by Rebekah Novak) and Xavier (played by George Loring), contribute to the depth of the story. Novak, who previously performed in Penobscot Theatre Company’s ‘Dial M for Murder’, captivates the audience with her charm as a cosmology professor, making complex concepts accessible and engaging.
The performance is not only visually stunning but also intellectually challenging, prompting audiences to reflect on both personal and cosmic themes. With its unique blend of art and science, ‘Cosmogenesis’ offers a fresh perspective on the human experience.
‘Cosmogenesis: The Story of Us’ will continue to be performed at the Versant Power Astronomy Center & Maynard Planetarium on October 13 at 19:00 and October 14 at 14:00 and 19:00.
