Massachusetts Faces Cold Snap and Freezing Rain This Weekend

UPDATE: Massachusetts is bracing for an arctic blast as cold and blustery conditions sweep across the state this Friday, with temperatures dipping into the mid-40s and a looming risk of freezing rain over the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued warnings as this significant weather system approaches.

Today, temperatures are expected to peak at 46°F in Boston, with gusty winds making it feel even chillier. In the Berkshires and northern Central Massachusetts, thermometers may struggle to reach 40°F. As evening falls, temperatures are projected to drop to 29°F in Boston, 31°F in Hyannis, and 22°F in Pittsfield, where a slight chance of rain and snow showers is anticipated later in the afternoon.

As the weekend nears, conditions will shift dramatically. Saturday morning will start off with sunshine, but clouds will roll in by the afternoon. The real concern lies with forecasted precipitation expected to begin Saturday night, spreading eastward across the state. Areas at higher elevations are at risk for freezing rain, although temperatures are forecasted to rise overnight, reducing the likelihood of icy conditions.

Weather experts predict that rain will taper off by Sunday morning, but not before temperatures initially surge into the 50s before plummeting into the 30s later in the day. Winds could gust up to 40 mph by late morning, creating a dangerous combination of cold and wind chill.

Residents are urged to prepare for potential travel disruptions and hazardous conditions due to the freezing rain, particularly in elevated terrains.

Stay tuned for continuous updates as this weather pattern develops. Be sure to follow local weather updates to keep informed of any changes that could impact your weekend plans.
