Ten Baby Names on the Verge of Extinction: A Generational Shift
A recent analysis by the naming database NameKun reveals that a significant number of classic baby names are falling out of favor at an alarming rate. Names that were once popular from the 1950s through the 1970s have seen usage declines of up to 90% from their mid-century peaks. Some of these names have even dropped out of the top 1,000 entirely, entering what experts refer to as “functional extinction.” This trend suggests that individuals with these names may find themselves among the last of their kind.
The following names are among those fading the fastest, along with insights into their decline and potential for revival.
The Names Facing Decline
1. Karen
Once perceived as a symbol of suburban charm, the name Karen has now become synonymous with social media memes and public meltdowns. According to Tyla, Karen plummeted to 4,844th place in 2022, with only four newborns given the name.
2. Lauren
Once the go-to name for “cool girls” in the 1990s, Lauren has also seen a steep decline. It peaked in 1996 at fifth place, when over 6,000 babies were named Lauren. As of last year, it now sits at 477th in the U.S.
3. Sheila
This name, which enjoyed popularity during the 1960s, is now often viewed as outdated. Despite its retro charm, Sheila’s usage has decreased significantly over the years, resembling a bygone era.
4. Brenda
Once the epitome of small-town appeal, Brenda has lost its luster. The name, which gained traction through popular culture, particularly in the series *Beverly Hills, 90210*, is now less frequently found among new parents.
5. Gladys
With an air of nostalgia, Gladys is a name that conjures images of vintage elegance. Rarely used today, it may see a revival among those seeking unique and retro names for their children.
Further Declining Names
6. Galvin
Galvin has all but disappeared from modern baby naming registries. The Daily Mail reports that it is rarely seen in global naming data today, marking its decline.
7. Neville
Once a sturdy British name, Neville has drifted into obscurity. It is now more likely to appear in crossword puzzles than in birth announcements.
8. Gary
Gary is another name facing a decline, as it seems to be retiring faster than new generations can bring it back to life. This once common name is becoming increasingly rare.
9. Roderick
With its medieval roots, Roderick evokes images of nobility. Despite its strong sound, it has fallen out of circulation and is rarely seen among today’s newborns.
10. Dale
Dale peaked in popularity alongside NASCAR but has since diminished in usage. This straightforward name is now nearly extinct among the younger generations.
Trends in baby naming are often cyclical, suggesting that some of these names could experience a resurgence in the future. As society continues to evolve, it is possible that names like Karen and Neville might once again fill nurseries, just as other styles have returned over time.
As these names fade into relative obscurity, they join a list of cultural artifacts that include answering machines and handwritten holiday cards—relics of a different era. The evolution of naming conventions serves as a mirror reflecting societal shifts and changing tastes across generations.
