Indiana Awards $42M in Recycling Grants, New License Plate Launches
UPDATE: Indiana announces a groundbreaking initiative with the allocation of $42 million in grants aimed at expanding recycling efforts across the state. This significant funding from the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board will support six organizations, including Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc., which will receive $301,011 to divert over 32,812 tons of recyclable material annually.
These grants are projected to create 42 jobs and prevent an astonishing 197,884 tons of waste from entering landfills each year, marking a vital step in Indiana’s environmental efforts. The grants, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, include funds for other organizations such as CT Polymers ($500,000) and Greencycle ($453,989).
In a related development, Gov. Mike Braun has appointed new members from Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties to various state boards and commissions, enhancing local representation in state governance. Noteworthy appointments include Elizabeth Bergeron to the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Services Commission and Rick Smith to the Underground Plant Protection Advisory Committee.
Additionally, Indiana Dunes Tourism is launching a new grant program with $50,000 available for community projects and marketing initiatives aimed at boosting tourism in Porter County. Applications are due by December 1, 2023, with selected recipients announced on January 5, 2024. This funding is open to both for-profit and non-profit organizations, promoting engagement in the community.
In health news, the Franciscan Physician Network has welcomed Dr. Marrium Siddiqui, an infectious disease specialist now accepting patients in Crown Point. Dr. Siddiqui brings extensive expertise, having completed her fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She is now available for appointments at the Franciscan Physician Network Specialty Center.
Moreover, starting in January, Indiana residents can show their support for Purdue University Northwest with a new specialty license plate. Each plate will cost $40, with $25 contributing directly to student scholarships. This initiative not only promotes school spirit but also provides financial assistance to students pursuing their education.
Finally, applications are now open for the next cohort of the Northwest Indiana Influential Women Association’s mentoring program, designed to empower the next generation of women leaders. Interested candidates must submit their applications by December 3 to participate in this enriching six-month program.
These developments underscore the active engagement of Indiana communities in fostering environmental sustainability, educational opportunities, and leadership growth. Stay tuned for more updates as these initiatives unfold.
