A statue honoring New Hampshire’s state dog, the Chinook, was unveiled on Saturday in Tamworth, celebrating the breed’s significant contributions to the state’s history. The Chinook was officially designated as New Hampshire’s state dog in 2010, making it one of the few state dogs recognized across the United States.

The breed’s name comes from a dog owned by the renowned author and explorer Arthur Walden. According to state historical accounts, Walden had property in Wonalancet in 1917 when the first Chinook was born. This dog, alongside Walden, made history as part of the first sled dog team to successfully reach the summit of Mount Washington. Their achievements also included introducing sled dog racing to New England.

The Chinook Owners Association recounts that in 1929, Walden and his dog were enlisted for an Antarctic supply expedition. Tragically, during this journey, Chinook is said to have wandered off, becoming lost and never returning. The statue aims to commemorate the heroic legacy of this breed and its connection to New Hampshire’s rich cultural tapestry.

Local officials and dog enthusiasts gathered at the unveiling ceremony, highlighting the Chinook’s role in shaping the state’s identity. The event not only honors a beloved breed but also emphasizes community pride in local history.

As the statue stands in Tamworth, it serves as a reminder of the bond between humans and dogs and the remarkable stories that can emerge from this relationship. The Chinook’s legacy continues to inspire, reflecting the spirit of adventure and the deep historical roots in New Hampshire.
