Richard Gere Urges Kindness in Parenting Inspired by Dalai Lama
UPDATE: In an eye-opening interview, actor Richard Gere, age 76, reveals that the most crucial parenting lesson he imparts to his sons comes directly from his long-time friend, the Dalai Lama. Gere emphasizes the power of kindness, a principle he believes his children should embrace in today’s world.
Speaking to People magazine, Gere stated, “You show kindness. That’s the best thing you can do.” This heartfelt message aims to guide his three sons—one from his ex-wife Carey Lowell and two with his current wife, Alejandra Silva—through life’s challenges.
The lesson stems from a profound moment shared between friends and the Dalai Lama, where they expressed concern about raising a child in contemporary society. Gere recalls, “His Holiness was asked… how do you teach them?” The Dalai Lama responded with wisdom that resonates deeply: “Teach them to be kind to insects, whom normally people don’t think well of and step on.” This invaluable lesson, according to Gere, expands into broader respect for all life.
Having practiced Buddhism since 1978, Gere’s bond with the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, has flourished over decades. In a previous interview, he reflected on his spiritual journey, noting, “It wasn’t a particular event… but just an ongoing innate questioning of what is this? Why am I here?” This quest for meaning has shaped his approach to parenting.
Gere also recently produced the documentary Wisdom of Happiness, featuring the Dalai Lama, which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October 2024. This project illustrates Gere’s commitment to sharing spiritual insights with a wider audience.
In a candid moment, Gere described his first meeting with the Dalai Lama in the Himalayas, emphasizing the spiritual leader’s sincerity and authenticity. “He’s completely simple and direct… like talking to a favorite uncle,” Gere said, highlighting the deep connection that influences his life and parenting.
This urgent message about kindness comes at a critical time when society increasingly grapples with issues of empathy and understanding. As parents and caregivers seek guidance, Gere’s reflections serve as a timely reminder of the virtues that can shape a better future for the next generation.
As Richard Gere continues to inspire through his words and actions, the call for kindness echoes louder than ever. This essential life lesson, rooted in compassion, is one that many parents may choose to adopt for their children as they navigate an often challenging world.
