Ukraine Launches ATACMS Strikes on Russia After Long Delay
UPDATE: Ukraine has officially resumed its strikes against Russian territory using US-made ATACMS missiles. This pivotal announcement comes just hours ago, marking a significant shift after prolonged delays and uncertainty surrounding US military policy.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces disclosed that these long-range missiles were utilized in a “precision strike” on Russian soil. This marks the first public confirmation of ATACMS use since the Trump administration commenced, renewing international focus on the escalating conflict.
The ATACMS system boasts a maximum range of approximately 190 miles and is typically launched from the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or the M240 Multiple Launch Rocket System, both of which Ukraine possesses. Officials have stated that these missile strikes will continue, further intensifying the ongoing military engagement.
Russian sources, including several Telegram channels, reported activation of air defense systems in the Voronezh region. However, independent verification of the specific targets remains elusive. The timing of Ukraine’s announcement suggests a noteworthy change in the Pentagon’s stance on the use of long-range missiles in the conflict.
After months of speculation regarding US approval for these strikes, this development follows a history of hesitance from the Biden administration. In November 2024, President Biden lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-provided launchers, allowing direct attacks on Russian territory, a move that had been feared to provoke further escalation from Moscow.
Since then, Ukraine has engaged in a series of strikes, previously targeting the Bryansk region. Yet, the recent months have seen a lull in public acknowledgment of ATACMS use, particularly after the return of President Donald Trump to the White House in January, amidst ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire with Russia.
Reports from August indicated that the Pentagon had been restricting Ukraine’s ability to deploy ATACMS effectively, creating a gap filled by Ukraine’s own long-range missile systems, such as the Flamingo. These domestically produced munitions have targeted critical infrastructure, including arms factories and oil facilities deeper within Russia.
As the situation develops, the global community watches closely. The implications of Ukraine’s renewed capability to strike Russia directly could reshape the dynamics of this conflict. With ongoing military tensions, the potential for escalation remains a pressing concern.
Authorities across various sectors are closely monitoring the situation, and further announcements from both the White House and the Pentagon are anticipated shortly. As Ukraine asserts its military strength, the international discourse on the conflict is likely to intensify, drawing attention to the shifting alliances and military strategies at play.
