During National Family Caregiving Month, Dr. Carol McKinley, President and CEO of Simpson, is raising awareness about the challenges faced by the millions of Americans who care for loved ones. With approximately 48 million adults in the United States serving as family caregivers, according to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Simpson is offering resources and guidance through its “Confident Caregiving for Family and Friends” webinar.

The responsibility of caregiving extends throughout the year, and Dr. McKinley emphasizes that it can be both challenging and rewarding. “It can be one of the most challenging roles a person takes on, but also one of the most meaningful,” she states. As the population ages, the need for caregivers—often family members or spouses—is expected to rise. Many caregivers find themselves handling medical tasks, such as administering injections or managing medications, without formal training.

Dr. McKinley notes that many caregivers hesitate to seek help or may feel compelled to shoulder the burden alone. A recent study by AARP revealed that 50% of caregivers are experiencing increased emotional stress, with women reporting higher levels of anxiety than their male counterparts.

Caring for the caregiver is crucial. “When caregivers are supported, both they and their loved ones thrive,” Dr. McKinley says.

Essential Reminders for Caregivers and Their Families

Many caregivers tend to neglect their own needs, which can lead to burnout. Dr. McKinley encourages caregivers to prioritize self-care. Simple activities such as taking a walk, joining an exercise class, or enjoying coffee with a friend can help replenish emotional reserves.

Additionally, families are urged to initiate important conversations early rather than waiting for a crisis. Discussing living arrangements, financial matters, or health preferences in a respectful and empathetic manner can prevent confusion and conflict down the line. The approach to these discussions, including language and tone, can significantly influence their outcomes.

Caregiving can often feel isolating, making it vital for caregivers to accept help when it is offered. Dr. McKinley highlights how even small gestures, such as sharing meals or running errands, can alleviate daily pressures.

Caregiving encompasses a wide range of emotions including love, frustration, grief, and gratitude. Acknowledging these feelings, rather than suppressing them, helps caregivers maintain resilience. Engaging in journaling, seeking counseling, or connecting with others in similar situations can provide valuable perspectives.

Exploring Resources for Caregiving

As care needs grow, families are encouraged to explore services that align with their loved one’s preferences and values. Simpson’s communities prioritize person-directed care, recognizing each resident’s choices, routines, and individuality. This emphasis on tailored care can bring peace of mind to both caregivers and those they support.

Experts advise families to approach difficult caregiving discussions with empathy and knowledge. The partnership between Jenner’s Pond, a Simpson community located in West Grove, Pennsylvania, and the University of Delaware’s Healthcare Theatre serves as an example. This collaboration presents caregiving scenarios and potential responses, which can open doors to deeper conversations.

“Caregiving is deeply rewarding. Many caregivers feel gratitude for the opportunity to support a loved one. However, it’s critical to remember: putting your own oxygen mask on first helps you be the best caregiver you can be,” Dr. McKinley emphasizes.

This November, Simpson encourages families to seek support and to recognize that confident caregiving begins with compassion for both others and oneself.
