Fugees’ Pras Michel Sentenced to 14 Years for Campaign Violations
Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, a member of the Grammy-winning group Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign. The sentencing took place on November 16, 2023, in a Washington courtroom, where U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly presided.
Michel was convicted in April 2023 on 10 counts related to campaign finance violations, which included conspiracy and making illegal contributions. His defense team had requested a significantly lighter sentence of three years, but federal prosecutors argued that the sentencing guidelines called for a life sentence due to the gravity of the offenses. Notably, the trial featured testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who provided insights into Michel’s actions and connections.
