Kansas City Chiefs Struggle as Taylor Swift Cuts Game Appearances
The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in a challenging position as the NFL season nears its conclusion. Currently holding a record of 5-5, the team is outside the playoff picture in the AFC, with a crucial game against the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-2) scheduled for November 23, 2023, at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs’ disappointing performance has coincided with a noticeable decrease in appearances by pop star Taylor Swift, the fiancée of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
Swift’s attendance at games has become a topic of discussion among fans, as her presence seemingly correlates with the team’s success. This season, she has attended only half of the home games, opting for a more low-key approach when she does show up. During the Chiefs’ home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 14, 2023, she reportedly made her entrance behind a moving wall to avoid drawing attention.
In the games Swift attended this season, the Chiefs have posted an impressive 4-1 record. Conversely, their performance without her presence has been lackluster, with a record of 1-4. This trend raises the question: do the Kansas City Chiefs need Taylor Swift to regain their competitive edge?
Swift has had a remarkable impact since she and Kelce went public with their relationship. The Chiefs won their first four games of the 2023 season with her in attendance, ultimately achieving a 10-3 record in games featuring her at the stands, including a thrilling 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
In the current season, the Chiefs are defending their Super Bowl title, and Swift has once again been a lucky charm. She attended seven regular season games, all resulting in victories, as well as playoff wins against the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills. However, that streak ended with a significant loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LX. Across her attendance record, Swift boasts an impressive 23-5 win-loss ratio for games she has attended in Kansas City.
Swift’s visibility at these games has sparked mixed reactions among football fans. While some enjoy her presence, others express frustration over the frequent camera shots showcasing the pop star during critical moments of the game. Swift has addressed this attention, stating in a Time magazine profile, “I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
With only seven games remaining in the 2023 season, the Chiefs must turn their performance around rapidly to secure a playoff spot. According to ESPN’s projection model, they face a 44.6 percent chance of missing the playoffs altogether. This would mark a significant shift, as the Chiefs have not missed the postseason since 2014, which coincides with Kelce’s first full year in the NFL.
For Chiefs fans hoping to extend their playoff streak, the message is clear: they may need to encourage Taylor Swift to clear her schedule for the remainder of the season.
