UPDATE: The Morning Call has just launched its 26th annual Be an Angel campaign, responding to an urgent need in the Lehigh Valley as many families face unprecedented economic challenges. With inflation driving up costs, local nonprofits are struggling to meet the basic needs of their communities.

As we enter the holiday season, the demand for assistance is critical. Nonprofit organizations—from food banks to shelters—are feeling the strain of increased requests for help. In this climate, the Be an Angel campaign aims to connect generous community members with those who need support the most.

“So many families and individuals are feeling the impact of rising costs and limited resources,” said Amarelis Rodriguez of the Lehigh Conference of Churches in Allentown. The conference is one of many agencies seeking donations, including thick blankets, sleeping bags, and winter gear for those in need.

This year’s campaign encourages contributions through a detailed wish list available at mcall.com/beanangel, showcasing specific items that nonprofits urgently require. Among those seeking help are the Northern Lehigh Food Pantry, which needs laundry detergent and personal care items, and the Parkland C.A.R.E.S Food Bank, requesting gift cards for food and toiletries.

The campaign extends the deadline for donations to January 1, 2026, recognizing the hectic nature of the holiday season. Even small contributions can make a significant difference. In the past 25 years, the Be an Angel campaign has raised nearly $6.2 million, with last year witnessing over $275,400 in tangible goods donated.

The call for help is not just about items; volunteers are also needed. Organizations like the Helping Hands Ministry are looking for assistance in various forms, from monetary donations to skilled labor. They require a pallet jack and a commercial food vacuum sealer, as well as a refrigerator truck to help serve their clients more effectively.

Local children are set to benefit significantly from the campaign as well. The Community Music School in Allentown is asking for new or gently used instruments, particularly violins, to support students unable to afford their own. Additionally, the Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program hopes to gather gently used books to distribute to children across the Valley.

As the need grows, community support remains crucial. Each contribution can help feed, shelter, and clothe those who are struggling. “It truly takes a community coming together to support those facing challenging times,” Rodriguez emphasized.

The Be an Angel campaign reflects the spirit of giving during the holiday season and encourages everyone to find ways to contribute, whether through donations or by volunteering time and skills. The heartwarming stories of past contributions show how community members have positively impacted countless lives.

As this campaign kicks off, it serves as a reminder that even in tough times, kindness and generosity can shine through.
