Lula to Contact Trump Over U.S. Military Moves Near Venezuela
Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, announced plans to reach out to former President Donald Trump regarding concerns over a significant U.S. military buildup near Venezuela. Lula expressed his apprehension that this military presence could threaten regional stability in South America.
During a press conference following the G20 summit in South Africa, Lula stated, “I’m very concerned about the military apparatus the U.S. has deployed in the Caribbean Sea.” He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting, “I intend to talk to President Trump about it, because it’s worrying me.”
The U.S. has intensified its military operations against suspected drug trafficking activities emanating from Venezuela, prompting criticism from various Latin American nations. Lula underscored the importance of maintaining South America as a peaceful region, articulating Brazil’s role in safeguarding stability. “There’s absolutely no reason to have a war right now,” he remarked, urging for a diplomatic solution before any escalation occurs.
Lula referenced the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting that history should not be repeated in the context of U.S.-Venezuelan tensions. “We must not repeat the mistake made in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” he stated, reinforcing the need for dialogue over military action.
The Brazilian leader had previously met with Trump during the ASEAN summit in late October, where they discussed the Venezuelan crisis. At that time, Lula offered to mediate discussions between the U.S. and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a means to alleviate tensions.
Lula’s forthcoming conversation with Trump is expected to address these critical issues, with hopes that a collaborative approach can foster peace in a region facing increasing challenges. The situation remains dynamic, and the implications of U.S. military actions could have far-reaching effects on the geopolitical landscape of South America.
