Nine Central Texas Teams Advance in High School Football Playoffs
UPDATE: Nine Central Texas high school football teams are gearing up for an intense third round of the UIL state playoffs this week, with games set to kick off on November 10, 2023. Defending Class 6A Division II champions, Vandegrift, and the six-time state champions, Lake Travis, are among the teams looking to secure their spots in the next round.
In last week’s area playoff action, Vandegrift dominated San Antonio Brandeis with a decisive 37-7 victory. Lake Travis faced a tougher challenge, narrowly defeating San Antonio Brennan 13-7 thanks to a standout defensive performance. Other Austin-area teams advancing include Dripping Springs, Weiss, Bastrop, San Marcos, Wimberley, Llano, and Granger.
However, it was a heartbreaking week for several teams with playoff aspirations. Notable upsets saw Cedar Park, Georgetown, LBJ, Anderson, Hutto, Pflugerville, Connally, Liberty Hill, and Lampasas eliminated from contention.
Fans are particularly eager for the match-up between Vandegrift and San Marcos, which is remarkable given San Marcos’s turnaround after finishing last season with an 0-10 record. The stakes are high, and the energy is palpable as these teams prepare to clash on the field.
Here’s the schedule for Central Texas teams this week:
- Class 6A DI: Lake Travis (12-0) vs. Los Fresnos (11-1) – 3 p.m. Friday, Buccaneer Stadium, Corpus Christi
- Class 6A DII: Vandegrift (10-2) vs. San Marcos (8-4) – 7:30 p.m. Friday, Alamodome
- Dripping Springs (10-1) vs. Medina Valley (10-2) – 2 p.m. Friday, Farris Athletic Complex, San Antonio
- Class 5A DI: Weiss (10-2) vs. Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill (9-3) – 5 p.m. Saturday, Planet Ford Stadium, Spring
- Class 5A DII: Bastrop (11-1) vs. Richmond Randle (12-0) – 1 p.m. Saturday, Blackshear Field, Prairie View
- Class 4A DII: Wimberley (8-4) vs. Sinton (11-1) – 7 p.m. Friday, Comalander Stadium, San Antonio
- Class 3A DI: Llano (11-1) vs. Goliad – 7 p.m. Friday, Bastrop Memorial Stadium
- Class 2A DII: Granger (12-0) vs. Junction (12-0) – 7 p.m. Friday, Johnson City HS
As excitement builds across Central Texas, these games promise to deliver thrilling moments and heart-stopping action. Be sure to tune in and support your local teams as they strive for playoff glory!
