Ciara Discusses Parenting Fears and Staying Engaged with Kids
Ciara, the accomplished singer and mother of four, has opened up about her biggest concern as a parent: where her children obtain their information. During a recent appearance on the “Angie Martinez IRL” podcast, the 40-year-old artist shared her thoughts on navigating modern parenting in an age where access to information is unprecedented.
She emphasized the importance of staying “tapped in” to current trends for the sake of her children. “This world is like bananas, and so I think you’ve got to be locked in even more now because the access is so high,” Ciara explained. Her four children include a son from her previous relationship with rapper Future and two daughters and another son with her husband, New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson.
As a parent, Ciara strives to maintain a connection with her kids, believing that this engagement helps her stay youthful and aware of their challenges. “I want to be, like, aware of what’s happening in their world,” she said. Reflecting on her own childhood experiences enables her to better understand her children’s realities. “I want them to feel comfortable with me, but I also want to make sure I’m thinking about what I could have done better to serve them better,” she added.
Ciara describes herself as a “partial” helicopter mom, indicating her desire to be actively involved in her children’s lives. She expressed a deep concern about the information they encounter outside the home, stating, “My greatest fear is that the world tells my kid information that shapes them when I could be the one telling them.” As her children grow and begin discussing topics learned at school, she worries about the potential misinformation they might absorb.
In her conversation, Ciara highlighted moments of pride when she manages to communicate important information to her kids before they hear it from others. “I feel really proud sometimes when you beat the world to telling your kids something,” she said. This proactive approach empowers her children, equipping them for the complexities of the world.
Beyond her fears, Ciara has also shared her aspirations for her daughters. In March, she told Parents magazine that she wants them to cultivate their self-worth, emphasizing the importance of understanding that they are not limited by their gender or ethnicity.
Her perspective on motherhood has also influenced how she views her career. Speaking to Vogue in August, Ciara noted that becoming a mother changed her self-perception and professional ambitions. “When I first began, I’m in an industry where it was taboo to have a child. The moment you had a child, you were automatically labeled as older or not focused,” she stated. The journey of balancing motherhood with her career aspirations has been rewarding and transformative.
Ciara’s candid reflections resonate with many parents navigating similar challenges in an information-rich environment. As she continues to learn and grow alongside her children, her commitment to staying engaged remains a priority.
