Shelburne Falls Women’s Club Launches Cookie Book for 100th Anniversary
The Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club is celebrating its centenary by launching a new cookie book, titled the “Centennial Cookie Book,” during the annual Moonlight Magic event. This celebration, scheduled for November 28, 2025, will take place at the Village Information Center from 16:00 to 21:00. Proceeds from the cookie sales and book purchases will support scholarships for local students.
For the past 25 years, the Women’s Club has hosted a Cookie Shop at Moonlight Magic, where visitors can purchase a variety of cookies in decorated containers or as individual treats. This year, the addition of the cookie book marks a special milestone for both the Cookie Shop and the club’s century-long history.
A Culinary Tribute to Community and Tradition
The “Centennial Cookie Book” features a collection of favorite recipes from club members, showcasing cookies that have been cherished for decades. Some recipes date back to a cookbook published by the club in 1928. The book was produced by a dedicated team, including photographer Amy Crosby, graphic designer Sarah Jarman, and artist Christin Couture.
Couture explained that the book’s creation involved staging and photographing a variety of cookies during last year’s Cookie Shop, which provided a vibrant backdrop for the recipes. “Using Amy’s gorgeous cookie portraits as a guide, we solicited recipes from the members who baked them,” she said. The team aimed to capture the essence of the club’s history while creating a visually appealing product.
The book’s design incorporates elements that reflect the club’s identity, such as its colors—lavender and white—and the club flower, the purple aster. It is priced at a reasonable $10, making it an accessible keepsake for both locals and visitors.
Building Community Through Sweetness
Kay Berenson, co-chair of the Cookie Shop, shared her thoughts on the atmosphere during Moonlight Magic. She described it as “heartwarming,” noting that multiple generations of families return for this festive occasion. “We have a lot of mini-reunions going on,” Berenson added.
The event attracts both regular attendees and newcomers, with many enchanted by the charming village atmosphere. Berenson recalled a humorous incident where a visitor inquired if the snow was real, likening the scene to that of a Hallmark movie.
To sustain this cherished tradition, the Women’s Club is seeking volunteers for various tasks, including baking, assembling cookie tins, and assisting during the event. Those interested can reach out via email at [email protected] or contact Kay Berenson directly at 413-240-8058.
The cookie shop’s enduring success highlights the community spirit that the Shelburne Falls Area Women’s Club fosters. By connecting generations through the joy of baking and sharing cookies, the club not only raises funds for scholarships but also creates lasting memories among residents and visitors alike.
As part of this year’s celebration, Leslie Taylor’s molasses-spice cookie recipe will be highlighted. Taylor, a club member known for her baking prowess, adapted this recipe from one her mother used more than fifty years ago.
The cookie book and the beloved cookies will be available for purchase at the Village Information Center during Moonlight Magic, as well as at local establishments like Nancy Dole Books and Raven Used Books following the event.
With the centennial celebration approaching, the Women’s Club is not only honoring its rich past but also working to ensure a bright future for the community through education and connection. Happy Moonlight Magic and happy cookie-eating to all!
