Honda Recalls Over 400,000 Civics for Wheel Detachment Risk

Honda has announced a significant recall of more than 400,000 Civic vehicles due to a safety defect that could lead to wheels detaching while driving. This recall, which affects Civic models manufactured between 2016 and 2021, was officially disclosed on October 31, 2025. The issue arises from a factory flaw involving improperly pressed steel seat anchors for the aluminum wheels, posing a serious risk to drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect could result in the wheel nut loosening, ultimately causing the wheel to detach from the vehicle. Honda has stated, “Wheel detachment can cause a loss of control, increasing the risk of an accident or injury.”

Details of the Recall Process

Honda began notifying vehicle owners on October 31, with communications expected to continue until December 8. Owners can verify if their vehicles are affected by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website. Additionally, Honda has established a customer service line at 1-888-234-2138 to assist those with concerns regarding the recall.

The defect was identified during a routine inspection in Japan in 2024, where it was discovered that some wheels were mistakenly shipped as finished products due to an error at a supplier’s factory in Italy. Honda has committed to inspecting all affected vehicles free of charge at authorized dealerships.

Current Status and Other Legal Issues

While Honda has not received any reports of injuries related to this defect, it is worth noting that the company is currently facing a lawsuit concerning warranty repairs for defective 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged engines. These engines are found in various models, including the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Acura RDX, produced between 2016 and 2022.
