Hurricane Melissa Strengthens to Category 5, Aiming for Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a catastrophic Category 5 storm, threatening to make landfall in Jamaica, a first in recorded history. As of early Monday, the hurricane was located approximately 130 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). Winds are reaching the peak of the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained speeds exceeding 157 mph.
The NHC indicates that Jamaica has never experienced a direct landfall from a Category 4 or 5 hurricane since records began in 1850. The island has, however, faced four Category 3 storms directly: in 1903, 1912, 1951, and 1988. This looming threat underscores the potential for unprecedented weather events in the region.
Forecast and Potential Impact
While interaction with the Jamaican terrain is expected to cause some weakening, Melissa is anticipated to maintain its strength as it approaches southeastern Cuba. The NHC has reported that the storm will also impact the southeastern Bahamas before moving toward Bermuda as a hurricane.
Forecast models show a consensus that after making landfall across several Caribbean nations, Melissa’s trajectory will curve back out into the Atlantic Ocean. This predicted path highlights the importance of preparedness for those in the affected areas.
As the Atlantic hurricane season draws to a close on November 30, it has been largely uneventful for the continental United States. Nevertheless, the intensification of Hurricane Melissa serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather patterns and the ongoing discussions surrounding climate change.
Officials are urging residents in Jamaica and surrounding areas to stay informed and follow safety protocols, as the situation continues to develop. With the potential for severe weather, local authorities are preparing for emergency responses to mitigate the impact of this historic storm.
