Ocean City Revitalizes Historic Lot with New Recreation Project
Ocean City, New Jersey, is set to transform an 85,688-square-foot lot that has remained vacant for years. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the town’s appeal following significant investments in beautification and redevelopment in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The project aims to create a public recreation space that will not only beautify the area but also improve traffic flow along Simpson Avenue and Haven Avenue.
The lot, located between 16th and 17th streets, was previously home to the Perry-Egan Car Dealership for several decades. In recent years, it served as overflow parking for the city and storage for municipal vehicles. Now, Ocean City officials have outlined a plan to clear the lot and construct a recreational area that will benefit both residents and seasonal visitors.
Enhancing Community Spaces
In the last 13 years, Ocean City has made significant strides in revitalizing its community spaces. Projects have included the reconstruction of popular playgrounds and extensive upgrades to the town’s boardwalk, demonstrating a commitment to creating a modern environment. The new recreation project is expected to follow this trend, providing a much-needed enhancement to the area that used to bustle with activity three decades ago.
As construction commences, visitors to the Ocean City Public Library, the Community Center, and the Aquatic/Fitness Center will need to utilize designated primary parking lots. Minor delays may occur for travelers along Simpson and Haven avenues due to ongoing work in the vicinity. While these adjustments may cause temporary inconvenience, the long-term benefits of the new recreational space are anticipated to outweigh any short-term disruptions.
A Glimpse into Ocean City’s Past
Historically, 16th Street was a vibrant commercial corridor, home to various businesses, including the CVS Pharmacy, Superfresh Supermarket, and the Laundromat, alongside the Perry-Egan Car Dealership. By 2025, the CVS Pharmacy is the only major business still operating within walking distance of the Community Center and Library, underscoring the changes that have occurred over the years.
The revitalization of this lot represents not just an improvement in aesthetic appeal but also a strategic move to reinvigorate the local economy by attracting both residents and tourists. Ocean City’s commitment to enhancing its public spaces reflects a proactive approach to community development, aiming to foster a more enjoyable and engaging environment for all.
