Washington State University Libraries Receives $231K Gift

Washington State University Libraries has received a substantial donation of $231,000 from the estate of alumnus Melvin “Mel” Hamre. This gift, announced in a post by WSU Insider, aims to enhance the Hamre Endowment, which provides ongoing support for students and library collections.

The funds from Hamre’s estate will specifically be allocated to support student employment opportunities, enabling students to manage educational expenses more effectively. In addition, the donation will facilitate the purchase of new books, journals, and other essential materials for the university’s library system.

Melvin Hamre’s Legacy and Contributions

Born in 1932 in Edgewood, Washington, Mel Hamre began his academic journey at Washington State College, now known as Washington State University (WSU), in 1950. To finance his education, he worked as a projectionist and film inspector in the audiovisual center located in Holland Library’s basement. Hamre graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1954 and later pursued a master’s degree in education, which he earned in 1961.

After teaching eighth-grade math and science for three years, Hamre served two years in the U.S. Army. He continued his education at Purdue University, where he obtained a master’s degree in 1963 and a doctorate in 1965. His career culminated in a position at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Animal Science and Extension Service, where he specialized in poultry production, processing, and marketing until his retirement in 1995.

Hamre remained actively engaged in his community after retirement, volunteering for 25 years at the Washington State History Museum and serving as a member of the Tacoma Historical Society. His contributions have extended beyond monetary donations; he has supported various initiatives at WSU, including the libraries, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences.

A Lasting Impact on Education

When asked why he chose to direct his philanthropy towards WSU, Hamre succinctly stated, “I’m a Coug.” His generosity has significantly impacted the university community, allowing for enhanced educational resources and opportunities for students.

Hamre’s lifetime contributions to WSU exceed $1 million, earning him recognition as a WSU Laureate. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of students and educators, ensuring that WSU remains a vital educational institution.
