Dan Aykroyd has officially recognized his cameo in the 1995 film *Casper* as a legitimate part of the *Ghostbusters* canon. The actor, who co-created the *Ghostbusters* franchise alongside the late Harold Ramis, made this declaration during an episode of the podcast *Talking Strange*. Aykroyd, famed for his portrayal of paranormal expert Dr. Ray Stantz, explained that the involvement of acclaimed director Steven Spielberg in his cameo solidifies its importance within the franchise.

Reflecting on his role, Aykroyd stated, “I think so, given the fact that [Steven] Spielberg asked for me and said, ‘Come and do this,’ and that they built me in there. Of course, it’s a beautiful nod to what we were doing with Ivan [Reitman] and everybody. I think you gotta include there in the canon, no doubt.”

Legacy of the Ghostbusters Franchise

In *Casper*, directed by Brad Silberling, the friendly ghost’s Maine estate is inherited by the wealthy heiress Carrigan, played by Cathy Moriarty. In a bid to rid the house of spirits, Carrigan hires various specialists, including Dr. Stantz, who famously runs out of the front door in his iconic khaki jumpsuit. He humorously references the franchise’s famed theme song, starting with, “Who you gonna call?” before delivering the punchline, “Someone else.”

Aykroyd’s character first appeared in the original *Ghostbusters* film released in 1984, followed by *Ghostbusters II* in 1989. He has reprised his role multiple times, including in the recent films *Ghostbusters: Afterlife* (2021) and the upcoming *Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire* set for release in 2024. Additionally, he made a brief appearance as a taxi driver in the 2016 female-led reboot of the franchise.

Aykroyd’s comments highlight the interconnectedness of the *Ghostbusters* universe and how various projects, even outside the main series, can contribute to its enduring legacy. His acknowledgment of the *Casper* cameo serves to reinforce the cultural significance of the *Ghostbusters* brand, spanning over four decades and multiple generations of fans.

As the franchise continues to evolve, Aykroyd’s insights provide a glimpse into the collaborative spirit that has characterized *Ghostbusters* since its inception, making it a beloved part of cinematic history.
