David Harbour Discusses Intense Psychotherapy Journey for Mental Health
Actor David Harbour, known for his role in the hit series *Stranger Things*, has shared insights into his mental health journey, revealing that he has been in therapy since 1999. Recently, he began what he describes as “intense psychotherapy” to manage his bipolar disorder. During an interview with Future of Personal Health, Harbour opened up about the challenges he has faced and the impact of therapy on his life.
Reflecting on his long-standing battle with mental health, Harbour noted that quitting drinking played a pivotal role in his journey. “When I quit drinking, it forced me to confront a lot of demons that rose to the surface,” he explained. Despite facing financial difficulties, Harbour managed to work with a clinical social worker who offered services on a sliding scale, allowing him to access the help he needed.
His recent commitment to intensive psychotherapy has made a significant difference in his treatment. Harbour emphasized the importance of psychotherapy, stating, “There has been a great resurgence in the idea that psychotherapy, along with responsible medication, is key to remission.” He highlighted that he has not experienced a manic flare-up since starting psychoanalysis with a qualified therapist.
Harbour candidly discussed the challenges of living with bipolar disorder. He described his manic episodes as chaotic, saying, “Thought becomes disordered and chaotic. Things that have no meaning become meaningful.” He elaborated on the psychological turmoil, stating, “There is a fundamental narcissism at the bottom of it all that makes me think I am the center of all things, for good or for ill.”
He also emphasized that medication alone is not a complete solution. “It’s only half the battle,” he stated, advising those struggling with mental health to seek affordable therapy options or support groups. “If you can’t afford therapy, find groups that don’t charge or don’t charge much. You will improve.”
In his reflections, Harbour reassured individuals whose mental health struggles define their lives that there is hope for a fulfilling existence. He shared his journey from doubt to resilience, recalling, “I once believed I wouldn’t achieve any success, but it does get better.” He concluded with an encouraging message: “I’m living proof that you can be anything you want to be.”
David Harbour’s openness about his mental health challenges serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and the potential for recovery through dedicated effort and support.
