In a heartfelt reflection, the late columnist Beth Ashley shared her insights on the joys of parenthood in a piece originally published in 2012. Through personal anecdotes, she captured the essence of family, love, and the bittersweet nature of life and loss.

Memories of Parenting

Recently, Ashley was reminded of her own experiences with young children when her great-niece visited with her 14-month-old son, Eamon Bruce. The visit transported her back to the days of raising her own children, now grown. She recalled the pride she felt as a mother when she wheeled her boys through the market, expecting onlookers to admire them. Although her sons have grown into adults—one now standing at an impressive 6 feet, 11 inches—the joy of those early years remains vivid in her memory.

Ashley expressed a sense of nostalgia when young women share their pregnancy news, feeling a rush of what she described as envy. She detailed the excitement of monitoring each stage of pregnancy, reading parenting books, and experiencing the physical changes that come with carrying a child. The anticipation of new life is something she cherished deeply.

Life’s Cycles and New Beginnings

Reflecting on her own family history, Ashley recounted how her first experience with a newborn occurred during the devastating hurricane of 1938 in New England. She vividly remembered the fear surrounding her newborn nephew, Wes, and the sense of wonder that accompanied his arrival. Later, her sister Faith faced the challenge of raising twins under difficult circumstances, with support from family members during a trying time. Ashley recalled how she marveled at the resilience of new mothers.

One profound moment for Ashley was witnessing the birth of her first grandson at Marin General. The miracle of childbirth has always left her in awe. Eamon, as a child born after the passing of his grandfather, Bruce Hildreth, symbolizes hope and continuity in the family. Ashley poignantly noted how Bruce would have cherished this new life.

With the arrival of Jessica’s first child, just months after the death of her father, Scottie, Ashley recognized the dual nature of loss and joy. She recalled her own tumultuous journey through motherhood, particularly when she was pregnant with her son Peter. Despite the challenges of her marriage, the birth of Peter marked a transformative moment in her life. Celebrating his 60th birthday in November 2023, she reflected on how love for one’s child can overshadow life’s adversities.

Ashley’s observations extend to the modern experience of parenthood, recognizing the all-encompassing nature of caring for a newborn. When Peter and his family moved in with her after the birth of his son, Byron, she was struck by how the baby seemed to dictate the rhythm of their lives. The demands of parenthood can be overwhelming, yet they are accompanied by profound joy and fulfillment.

Recently visiting the newborn daughter of Gina and Trip, Ashley was reminded of the fragility of new life. Weighing less than 6 pounds, the baby was a delicate reminder of the wonder of birth. During a visit with Jessica and Eamon, Ashley was pleasantly surprised by the calmness of the household. The atmosphere was filled with love, showcasing a positive side of parenthood, free from the typical chaos often associated with raising infants.

Through her reflections, Ashley emphasized that parenthood, despite its challenges, is a remarkable journey filled with blessings. The memories of her children and grandchildren serve as a testament to the enduring power of love and family.
