Lebanon’s ‘A Sad and Beautiful World’ Unveils Trailer for Oscars

Lebanon’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars, the romantic drama A Sad and Beautiful World, has released its international trailer. Directed by Cyril Aris, the film showcases a poignant story of love and loss set against the backdrop of Lebanon’s complex history.

The narrative follows childhood sweethearts Nino and Yasmina, played by Hasan Akil and Mounia Akl, who find their paths diverging before reuniting in their twenties. Their relationship evolves alongside the turbulent events that have shaped Lebanon over the years.

Film Premieres and Awards

The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023, specifically in the parallel section known as Giornate degli Autori (formerly Venice Days). It garnered significant acclaim, winning the audience-voted People’s Choice Award. Following its success in Venice, A Sad and Beautiful World is now participating in the MENA festival circuit, with upcoming screenings scheduled for the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Red Sea International Film Festival.

This project marks a notable return for Mounia Akl, who has previously focused on directing, with credits that include the acclaimed film Costa Brava, Lebanon. The cast also features talents such as Julia Kassar, Camille Salameh, Tino Karam, and Nadyn Chalhoub.

Production and Distribution Details

Produced by Georges Schoucair of Abbout Productions (Lebanon), the film also includes contributions from Jen Goyne Blake and April Shih of Diversity Hire (USA) and Georg Neubert and Jasper Wiedhöft of Reynard Films (Germany). It is co-produced with Sunnyland Film, a participant in the ART initiative, and The Red Sea Fund, part of the Red Sea International Film Festival’s efforts to support regional cinema.
