Luigi Mangione, currently incarcerated at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, has turned to the music of Taylor Swift and Charli XCX for solace during his time in jail. In a letter that has gained traction online and been verified by TMZ, Mangione expressed his gratitude for their songs, specifically mentioning Swift’s “Cardigan.”

He confessed that he had not previously listened to either artist but decided to download their music after a fabricated list of his favorite musicians circulated on social media. While walking laps in the prison yard, Mangione tried out “Cardigan” until another inmate, known as “King,” confronted him about his musical choices. “King” reportedly ridiculed Mangione’s playlist and introduced him to new music, leading him to swap his selections for tracks by Lil Durk.

In his letter, Mangione reflected on the small comforts he appreciates while in custody, including the meals provided and the correspondence he receives from fans. His current predicament stems from serious legal issues; he has been charged by both state and federal authorities in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, on December 4, 2024. Should he be convicted of murder with a firearm in the federal case, he faces the possibility of a death penalty sentence.

As of now, representatives for Mangione have not provided any comments regarding his recent letter or the circumstances surrounding his case. The unexpected revelation of his newfound musical preferences adds an intriguing layer to his situation, as he navigates life behind bars amid serious legal challenges.
