Filming has officially commenced for Mel Gibson‘s highly anticipated sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ. However, fans of the original film, The Passion of the Christ, will notice significant cast changes.

In a surprising move, Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus Christ in the 2004 film, will be replaced by Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen. The role of Mary Magdalene, previously held by Monica Bellucci, will now be played by Mariela Garriga. Additional casting shifts include Kasia Smutniak stepping in as Mary and Pier Luigi Pasino portraying Peter. Notably, Riccardo Scamarcio takes on the role of Pontius Pilate, while actor Rupert Everett will appear in a small but significant role.

Production Details and Narrative Focus

Set three days after Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday, The Resurrection of the Christ aims to present a complex narrative. According to sources, the decision to recast many roles was influenced by the high costs associated with using digital effects to de-age the original cast members. A source disclosed to Variety that the extensive CGI required would have been financially burdensome.

Filming began this week at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, marking a significant step forward in a project Gibson has been developing for years. The director previously discussed the challenges of conveying the story’s depth during an appearance on EWTN’s The World Over YouTube show. He stated, “It’s a big story, it’s a difficult concept and it’s taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story.”

Gibson emphasized the need to juxtapose the central event with broader narratives, explaining that the story is not linear and involves multiple realms, which he described as potentially “sci-fi.”

Release Dates and Future Installments

The film will be released in two parts, with the first installment scheduled for March 26, 2027, coinciding with Good Friday. The second part is set to follow on May 6, 2027, which is celebrated as Ascension Day.

As production progresses, fans and industry observers will closely watch how these changes impact the film’s reception and storytelling. The original film garnered significant attention and controversy, making the sequel a highly anticipated event in the cinematic landscape.

Further updates regarding the film’s development are expected as Gibson continues to navigate the complexities of this ambitious project.
