Valve’s Steam Glitch Affects Indie Game Launch, Offers Apology
Valve’s recent technical glitch has had a significant impact on the launch of the indie game Planet Centauri, developed by Permadeath. Initially, the game accumulated an impressive 138,000 wishlists on Steam over its decade-long development. However, during its launch, a bug prevented wishlist emails from being sent, resulting in a disappointing sales figure of just 581 copies within the first five days.
In response to the situation, Valve offered the developers a chance to be featured prominently on Steam’s front page as a form of apology. This promotion was scheduled for November 12, 2025. While Planet Centauri did receive visibility on that day, it coincided with the unveiling of major new products, including the Steam Machine, Steam Frame VR headset, and a new Steam controller, which overshadowed the game’s promotion.
Developer Laurent Lechat discussed the unfortunate timing with Polygon, explaining, “The day was chosen more or less randomly on our end.” He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of Valve’s announcements, stating it was simply “bad luck and we must accept it.”
Despite the challenges, the promotion did yield some benefits. On the day of the Daily Deal, Planet Centauri sold around 5,000 copies, a figure that Lechat views positively. He remarked that although it “seems like a small amount,” these sales would greatly aid the studio, allowing them to sustain operations for at least a year while they work on their second game.
The broader context reveals a troubling trend for indie developers on the Steam platform. Research indicates that over 5,000 games released on Steam this year failed to earn enough revenue to recoup the $100 fee required to list a game on Valve’s store. This situation highlights the competitive and often unforgiving landscape that independent game developers face.
As Planet Centauri continues to navigate these hurdles, the situation exemplifies the delicate balance between technical issues and the success of indie games in the digital marketplace. The developers remain hopeful that the recent sales boost will provide the necessary support to move forward with their future projects.
