Biohacking Revolution: Inside Upgrade Labs’ Human Upgrade Center
The biohacking movement has found a new home in Austin, Texas, with the establishment of Upgrade Labs, a facility designed to democratize access to advanced wellness technologies. Founded in 2017 by Dave Asprey, widely recognized as the pioneer of biohacking, the center aims to provide high-tech solutions for individuals seeking to enhance their physical and mental capabilities without the exorbitant costs typically associated with such treatments.
Asprey outlined his vision, stating, “With everything I do, there’s a free version, a cheap version and the crazy billionaire version. The problem is that everyone wants the billionaire version, but almost no one can afford it.” Upgrade Labs offers a monthly membership priced at $189, which grants access to a range of cutting-edge therapies previously reserved for the wealthy elite.
During a recent visit to the Austin location, I experienced a variety of treatments that aim to rejuvenate and optimize the human body. The facility boasts an array of advanced recovery tools that promise to enhance energy levels and improve overall well-being.
The Big Squeeze: Compression Therapy at Its Best
One of the standout treatments is the Ballancer Pro, commonly referred to as “The Big Squeeze.” This FDA-approved compression therapy suit envelops the body in a series of air chambers that inflate and deflate in rhythmic waves. Designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, it helps to eliminate toxins and maintain fluid balance.
After donning the suit for a **40-minute session**, I quickly noticed the immediate benefits. The targeted pressure on my stomach, hips, and thighs alleviated muscle soreness and improved circulation. Following the treatment, my body felt lighter and less bloated, a result echoed by numerous users, including celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Paris Hilton.
Innovative Therapies for Enhanced Recovery
Next, I tried the pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) blanket, which delivers low-level electromagnetic waves to recharge cells throughout the body. According to Asprey, this therapy can enhance cell performance and promote muscle recovery. As I lay under the blanket, the gentle pulses targeted specific areas of soreness in my back and knee. Remarkably, after just 12 minutes, I felt a significant reduction in discomfort, allowing me to tackle the remainder of my fitness routine with renewed vigor.
Following the PEMF treatment, I experienced the Redcharger, a frequency-specific light therapy device that utilizes a combination of red and infrared light to stimulate cellular function. After a 20-minute session, I felt rejuvenated, with my mind clearer and my mood elevated. Asprey noted, “It’s like a whole-system upgrade.”
The facility also offers a cryotherapy chamber where patrons are exposed to extreme cold temperatures, reaching as low as -175°F. Despite initial apprehension, the session provided a unique rush, invigorating my body and turning discomfort into an exhilarating experience. Asprey explained the benefits, stating that this exposure helps burn calories and reduces inflammation, contributing to an overall sense of well-being.
Finally, I explored the metabolic trainer, which mimics altitude training by alternating oxygen levels for a unique aerobic workout. Monitoring my blood oxygen levels during this 40-minute session enhanced my breathing and improved my endurance significantly.
As I left Upgrade Labs, it became clear why the facility is gaining popularity in Austin. The blend of advanced technologies and accessible pricing makes it a compelling option for those seeking to enhance their health and wellness. Should Upgrade Labs expand to other cities, such as New York, it may become a regular destination for many looking to invest in their health without breaking the bank.
