Five Shower Habits That Harm Your Hair, According to Expert
Showering may seem like a simple part of daily life, but improper techniques can lead to significant hair damage and exacerbate hair thinning. Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan, cofounder and hair transplant surgeon at Smile Hair Clinic in Istanbul, Turkey, has identified five common mistakes people make while showering that negatively impact their hair health.
Understanding proper hair care during showers is essential for maintaining hair thickness and vitality. Dr. Erdoğan’s insights shed light on how small adjustments can make a considerable difference in hair quality.
Common Mistakes That Damage Hair
One of the most frequent errors is using hot water for showers. While it may feel relaxing, hot water can strip hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and brittleness. Dr. Erdoğan recommends opting for lukewarm water instead. This temperature helps to keep the hair’s moisture balance intact while still allowing for effective cleansing.
Another common oversight is the choice of shampoo. Many individuals use products that contain harsh sulfates and chemicals. These ingredients can irritate the scalp and contribute to hair thinning. Dr. Erdoğan suggests selecting sulfate-free shampoos that are formulated to be gentler on both the hair and scalp.
Additionally, the technique used to wash hair can have a substantial effect. Rubbing the hair vigorously can cause breakage and damage. Instead, Dr. Erdoğan advises gently massaging the scalp with fingertips to stimulate blood flow while minimizing harm to the hair shaft.
Post-Shower Care Matters
The way people handle their hair after showering is equally important. Many dry their hair roughly with a towel, which can lead to increased friction and breakage. A more effective method involves softly squeezing out excess water with a towel and then wrapping it gently around the hair. This approach minimizes damage and helps retain moisture.
Finally, Dr. Erdoğan emphasizes the importance of heat styling. Frequent use of hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can weaken hair over time. If heat styling is necessary, he recommends using protective sprays designed to shield hair from damage.
By addressing these common showering mistakes, individuals can take proactive steps toward healthier hair. Dr. Erdoğan’s advice highlights that even small changes in routine can yield significant improvements in hair health, particularly for those concerned about thinning hair.
Incorporating these simple yet effective practices into daily life may help many individuals enhance their hair care routine and maintain thicker, healthier hair.
