Beloved Businessman and Family Man Fred Oken Passes Away at 92

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Frederick Shane Oken, known affectionately as Fred, announces his passing on November 22, 2025, at the age of 92. Surrounded by his beloved wife, Mona Oken, whom he cherished for 45 years, Fred departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, humor, and commitment to family.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1933, Fred experienced a significant life change at the young age of 7 when his family moved to Los Angeles, California. As a teenager, Fred faced personal challenges when his mother fell ill. He dedicated himself to caring for her until her death, demonstrating loyalty and compassion that defined his character. Following her passing, Fred’s father became a co-founder of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding treatments for the illness that claimed Fred’s mother.

Fred’s impact extended beyond his family. He was a cherished friend and a steadfast brother to his siblings, Stan, Buzz, and Ruth. His role as a loving father and grandfather was evident in the lives of his four children and eight grandchildren. Fred nurtured strong family ties, creating lasting memories through shared experiences and values.

In addition to his dedication to family, Fred was a successful businessman and entrepreneur. He ran his own insurance agency and brokerage for many years before focusing on real estate investments. His professional journey exemplified a commitment to hard work and integrity, earning him respect in the business community.

Fred’s passion for baseball was another defining aspect of his life. He played at L.A. State during college and later achieved semi-professional status with the Chicago White Sox. This love for the sport became a cherished family tradition, with frequent outings to Dodger Stadium. Fred believed in the excitement of the game, often stating, “You can’t leave until it’s over! You never know what’s going to happen in a baseball game!”

Beyond sports, Fred had a creative side, enjoying woodworking. He spent countless hours crafting beautiful bowls on his lathe, showcasing his talent and dedication to his craft. He also embraced his Jewish heritage, hosting lively Passover Seders and joyous Chanukah celebrations that brought family and friends together in warmth and laughter.

Funeral services for Fred Oken will be held on November 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park, located at 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America or any of the many ALS charities, which would have brought Fred great joy.
