As the festive season approaches, the Twin Cities area is alive with a vibrant array of holiday performances. From classical ballet to contemporary theatre, there is something for everyone to enjoy this December.
Magical Ballet and Classic Operas
The enchanting ballet, The Snow Queen, presented by Ballet Co.Laboratory, returns to the stage this December. Based on the beloved Danish fairy tale, the production follows young Gerda on her quest to rescue her brother Kai from the clutches of the Snow Queen. Choreographed by Zoé Emilie Henrot and set to the music of British composer Ethel Smyth, the performance promises to captivate audiences with its magical storytelling. Showtimes are scheduled for 19:00 on December 19, with additional performances on December 20 and 21 at Ted Mann Concert Hall, University of Minnesota. Tickets range from $40 for children and students to $50 for adults.
Another classic on this season’s agenda is St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s rendition of Handel’s Messiah. Featuring soprano Liv Redpath, along with an impressive lineup of soloists, the performances will take place at the Basilica of St. Mary and Ordway Concert Hall from December 18 to 21. Ticket prices vary from $6 to $70.
Modern Takes on Holiday Classics
For those seeking a more contemporary experience, Loyce Houlton’s long-standing tradition, Nutcracker Fantasy, will be performed at the State Theatre. This updated version of the classic story features dancers from over 20 schools accompanied by a 44-piece orchestra. Performances run from December 13 to 21, with tickets priced between $25 and $160.
In the realm of film, actress Michelle Pfeiffer stars in the holiday movie Oh. What. Fun.. Directed by Thomas Showalter, the film follows Claire, who takes a break from her holiday obligations, only to be overlooked by her family. The film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime starting December 3.
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will bring a taste of New Orleans to the Twin Cities with their Creole Christmas program. Scheduled for performances on December 19 and 20 at the Dakota, the band, led by tuba player Ben Jaffe, will deliver a festive jazz experience. Tickets start at $74.91.
Another local favorite, the bar band Trailer Trash, will continue its holiday tradition with a series of honky-tonk shows throughout December. The band, which began its journey in 1992, will perform at various venues, including the Turf Club in St. Paul on December 19 and 20. Tickets are priced between $30 and $35.
The Ordway Center will also host a reimagined version of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar from December 9 to 28. The production features a talented cast, including Jack Hopewell as Jesus and Elvie Ellis as Judas, promising to deliver a unique holiday spirit. Ticket prices range from $46.50 to $156.50.
Experience Holiday Traditions and Art
For those looking to engage with holiday traditions, the historic Split Rock Lighthouse offers tours that explore winter survival and holiday celebrations from the 1930s. These tours will run from November 28 through December 28, with special appearances by Santa on December 13 and 14. Admission prices are between $10 and $20.
Visitors can also enjoy the enchanting Tomte Tales: Legends of Winter at the American Swedish Institute. This interactive experience, featuring the Nordic folklore spirit Tomte, runs until January 25 and includes a holiday market with over 60 local artisans.
Finally, art enthusiasts can explore the festive watercolor paintings of Nadezhda Glazunova, which capture the essence of holiday cheer in a traditional Russian village. The exhibition at the Museum of Russian Art will conclude on January 11, with admission fees ranging from $5 to $15.
