Donum Estate Blends Exceptional Wines with World-Class Art
The Donum Estate in California’s Carneros wine region has emerged as a unique destination, pairing exquisite wines with an extraordinary collection of contemporary art. Nestled between Sonoma and Napa counties, the estate features over 60 monumental sculptures, including works by renowned artists such as Jaume Plensa, Ai Weiwei, and Yayoi Kusama. This combination of art and wine offers visitors an engaging experience set against the backdrop of rolling hills and cool breezes from San Pablo Bay.
When entering the estate, guests are greeted by a striking 20-foot-tall alabaster sculpture titled “Sanna,” created by Jaume Plensa. This initial impression sets the tone for the property, which is considered to have one of the largest private sculpture collections in any winery worldwide. Many of the sculptures are strategically placed throughout the grounds, some hidden among groves and others in more visible spots, all accessible through reservation-only tours.
Allan Warburg, a Danish entrepreneur, and his wife, Mei Warburg, acquired the property in 2008, with the couple taking full control by 2011. Initially a dairy farm, the estate underwent a transformation into an art haven as the Warburgs sought to create a space where art and nature coexist harmoniously. According to Chief Executive Angelica de Vere Mabray, the integration of art into the estate evolved organically, with pieces added based on their suitability within the landscape.
The Warburgs began their art journey with Zhan Wang’s “Artificial Rock No. 126,” a stainless-steel representation of a traditional Chinese scholar’s rock, reflecting Mei’s passion for contemporary Chinese art. This initial installation paved the way for a growing collection that now includes more than 30 new works added since 2019. The estate’s focus has shifted towards site-specific commissions, allowing artists to respond directly to the estate’s unique conditions.
One notable addition is Olafur Eliasson’s Vertical Panorama Pavilion, completed in 2022. This circular structure features a conical glass canopy made up of 832 colored panels, each reflecting various environmental attributes of the region. Nearby, artist Yang Bao created “Hyperspace,” a gold mirrored pyramid that shimmers amidst native vegetation, accompanied by an evolving soundscape.
Among the most photographed works is Richard Hudson’s heart-shaped sculpture titled “Love Me,” which stands prominently on a distant hill. The estate’s newest addition, Sanford Biggers’ “Oracle,” combines African and European influences, showcasing the Warburgs’ commitment to diverse artistic expressions.
Visitors can experience the estate in various ways, ranging from guided tours on all-terrain vehicles priced at $250 to wine tastings that start at $100. For those interested in a more personalized experience, a self-guided art tour is available for $50, allowing guests to explore the collection at their own pace. The estate’s materials provide detailed maps and descriptions, ensuring visitors can fully appreciate each artwork.
De Vere Mabray emphasizes that Donum aims to create an approachable atmosphere, avoiding the elitist feel often associated with galleries. “The art is serious, but it’s also approachable,” she states, highlighting the estate’s focus on hospitality. The minimalist design of the Donum Home and tasting rooms, created by Bay Area architect Matt Hollis, blends seamlessly into the landscape, prioritizing the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
Donum Estate not only focuses on art but also operates as a functioning vineyard. Half of its 200 acres are planted with grapes, while the remainder is dedicated to gardens and farmland. The estate is one of the few wineries in California to hold regenerative organic certification, underscoring its commitment to sustainable farming practices.
As the Warburgs continue to select new pieces primarily based on instinct, the collection reflects their personal vision and artistic interests. While other wineries in the region incorporate art, such as Hess Persson Estates and Hall Wines, Donum stands out for its cohesive blend of wine, art, and landscape, creating a truly unique experience.
“Out here, it’s just you, the vines, the sky, and the art,” tour guide Alexandra Reif summarizes, capturing the essence of what makes Donum Estate a remarkable destination in the heart of California’s wine country.
