Harvest Hope Farm, located just north of Moorhead, Minnesota, has made a significant impact on children’s nutrition by donating more than 700 pounds of fresh produce to Peace Academy Preschool in Fargo, North Dakota. This initiative aims to enhance healthy eating habits and nutrition education among preschoolers, introducing them to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

In response to a $15,000 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program and an additional $50,000 from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Harvest Hope Farm constructed a year-round growing dome. This facility allows for the cultivation of a diverse range of produce throughout the year, including peas, beans, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and squash.

The farm’s commitment to local children extends for the next two years, during which all produce grown in the dome will be donated to Peace Academy Preschool. This initiative not only aims to increase dietary fiber in the children’s meals but also exposes them to fresh produce, fostering healthy eating habits from an early age.

In addition to the donations from Harvest Hope Farm, the preschool has implemented a hydroponic garden that provides lettuce and other greens to complement the fresh produce. This dual approach enhances the nutritional offerings available to the children, ensuring they receive a well-rounded diet.

The collaboration between Harvest Hope Farm and Peace Academy Preschool exemplifies how local agricultural efforts can directly benefit community health and education. By prioritizing fresh, locally sourced food, this partnership is paving the way for a healthier future for young children in the Fargo area.
