Michelle Obama Unveils Fashion Journey in New Book “The Look”
Michelle Obama has shared insights into her fashion evolution during her time as First Lady of the United States in her new book, titled “The Look.” Published earlier this month, the book captures her journey from growing up on the South Side of Chicago to becoming a global fashion icon. In a conversation held on Wednesday night, Obama reflected on the practicality of her wardrobe choices, which often had to accommodate a range of activities, from formal speeches to gardening with schoolchildren.
Throughout her eight years in the White House, Obama became a prominent figure not only for her initiatives but also for her style. She noted, “I was concerned about, ‘Can I hug somebody in it? Will it get dirty?’” This practicality drove her to select clothing that was both versatile and welcoming.
Iconic Fashion Moments
Among her notable fashion choices, Obama highlighted the significance of her inaugural gown. Designed by Jason Wu, a then-unknown designer from Taiwan, the white, one-shoulder chiffon dress became a defining moment for both her and Wu. “We were beginning to realize everything we did sent a message,” Obama said, emphasizing her belief in the impact of fashion decisions.
Another memorable outfit was her rose gold gown by Versace, worn during the final state dinner of the Obama administration. Reflecting on the dress, she described it as a “kind of a, ‘I don’t care’ dress,” symbolizing a bold statement as her time in the White House came to an end.
Obama also discussed her choice of attire for President Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021. She wore a maroon ensemble by Sergio Hudson, designed with practicality in mind. “I wanted to be able to move. I wanted to be ready,” she said, alluding to the tense political climate following the January 6 Capitol riot. The outfit gained widespread attention, with Obama admitting she was unaware it would “break the internet.”
Reflecting on the East Wing
During the discussion, Obama reminisced about the East Wing, the traditional workspace for First Ladies, contrasting it with the West Wing’s serious atmosphere. She described the East Wing as a joyful space filled with “apples, children, puppies and laughter.” It was here that she championed various initiatives, including childhood obesity, military family support, and global education for girls.
Obama emphasized her and her husband’s perspective on the White House, stating they viewed themselves as caretakers rather than owners. “Every president has the right to do what they want in that house, so that’s why we’ve got to be clear on who we let in,” she remarked, stressing the importance of inclusivity and approachability in her role.
In “The Look,” Obama not only chronicles her fashion choices but also the messages behind them, reflecting her commitment to making a positive impact through every aspect of her public life. As she continues to inspire many, her story serves as a reminder of the intersection between personal style and social influence.
