Community members in Greeneville can look forward to an evening of uplifting gospel music during the Night of Worship at Tusculum University. Scheduled for October 30, 2023, at 19:00, the event will take place in the Marilyn duBrisk Theatre at the Annie Hogan Byrd Fine Arts Center. Local artists, including Madison Metcalf-Shelton and the bluegrass gospel band Threads of Faith, will perform, contributing to a festive atmosphere as part of the university’s Homecoming celebration.

The Night of Worship aims to support the Christian Leadership Institute, an initiative focused on fostering Christ-centered leadership and enhancing spiritual growth among students and the broader community. The Rev. E.J. Swatsell, director of spiritual life and special projects at Tusculum, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “We are delighted to enrich lives with performances by excellent artists who glorify God and bless audiences with their uplifting music.” He added that the talent present will inspire attendees to deepen their faith.

Performing artist Madison Metcalf-Shelton is known for her mix of traditional and contemporary gospel music. She has previously showcased her talent at events like Tusculum’s Old Oak Festival and recently released her album, “Right to Jesus”, in 2023. Meanwhile, Threads of Faith has been captivating audiences since 2016, having formed at a church in East Tennessee. The band has composed several original songs and has performed across various churches in the region.

Supporting Christian Leadership

The Christian Leadership Institute encompasses multiple initiatives aimed at nurturing Christian values within the university. Its first phase included the Christians in Business Dinner held in May, where the late Chuck Bowlin was posthumously honored with the inaugural Christian Leadership Award. Another component already in operation is the Discipleship Living-Learning Center, which consists of two residences specifically for male and female students. The male residence is named The Bowlin House.

The center promotes a Christ-centered environment where first- and second-year students can engage in Bible studies, mentorship, and ministry activities. Older students serve as peer mentors, conducting weekly discipleship sessions and facilitating Bible studies. Participating students benefit from a $2,000 annual scholarship to assist with their educational expenses.

Looking ahead, Tusculum University plans to host the Pioneer Discipleship Weekend in January, a retreat designed to help high school students strengthen their relationship with God and learn about living as His disciples.

Tickets for the Night of Worship are priced at $10 and can be purchased via credit or debit card through the university’s website at https://site.tusculum.edu/homecoming-2/. Cash purchases will also be accepted at the door, subject to availability. This event promises to be not only a celebration of music but also a significant step in cultivating strong Christian leadership within the community.
