Bar Owner Faces Backlash for Controversial Solo Drink Policy
A bar owner in Altrincham, England, is at the center of a heated debate over a controversial policy that prohibits solo drinkers from entering after 21:00. Carl Peters, owner of the cocktail and karaoke venue Alibi, has sparked outrage online after sharing a video in which he addressed accusations of discrimination related to the policy.
In the video, which has attracted over 10,000 views on Instagram, Peters recounted an encounter with a customer who challenged the “No Single Entry” rule. The customer likened the policy to discriminatory practices against racial groups, prompting Peters to respond dismissively, stating, “Don’t bring your woke agenda here.” He later clarified that his intention was to highlight the necessity of such a policy for liability reasons.
Peters has maintained that the rule is essential for the safety of customers. He argued that if a solo patron were to experience a medical emergency in a crowded environment, staff may not be able to assist quickly enough. “Unless you’re with a group, and we know who you’re with, you’re not coming in,” he explained in a follow-up video.
The policy has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with many commenters branding it “pathetic” and “narrow-minded.” Some individuals expressed their frustration, noting that they often go out alone after work without causing disturbances. They argued that the rule unfairly targets introverts or those who prefer a quiet drink to socialize.
Despite the backlash, some patrons have voiced support for Peters’ stance. One woman commented, “As a mum of two young adult daughters, I welcome your policy,” emphasizing “safety in numbers.” This mixed response has fueled discussions around the balance between safety and inclusivity in nightlife venues.
As the controversy gained traction, Peters attempted to downplay the situation, referring to it as a “total non-story.” He emphasized that the restriction only applies during peak nightclub hours and that solo patrons are welcome earlier in the evening. “This is standard procedure in nightlife,” he stated, asserting that the policy is not groundbreaking.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Peters reiterated his commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all patrons. “We will maintain our safe and responsible approach to running our venue and business,” he said, adding that he was surprised by the public interest in his policy.
The discussion surrounding Peters’ decision highlights broader issues related to nightlife safety and the evolving expectations of patrons. As the debate continues, it reflects the complex dynamics of social behavior in contemporary drinking establishments, prompting a reevaluation of entry policies in bars and clubs across various regions.
