Clippers Fall to Grizzlies in Sixth Straight Home Loss, 112-107
The Los Angeles Clippers squandered a promising start and suffered a disappointing defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies, losing 112-107 on November 24, 2023. This defeat marks their sixth consecutive loss at home, eliminating them from contention in the NBA Cup. The game took place at the Intuit Dome, following a challenging seven-game road trip.
The Clippers showcased a strong first half, demonstrating aggressive defense that stifled the Grizzlies’ offensive efforts. They limited Memphis to just five fast-break points and disrupted numerous layup attempts. Kawhi Leonard and James Harden each contributed double-digit scores, helping the team seize a 63-50 lead at halftime.
Despite their initial success, the Clippers (5-14) faltered in the second half. The Grizzlies, who had struggled to convert easy shots early in the game, gained momentum and reclaimed the lead at 87-85 within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Vince Williams Jr. propelled Memphis ahead with a crucial floater shortly thereafter.
Leonard, who had recently returned from a ten-game absence due to ankle and foot injuries, momentarily revived the Clippers’ hopes with six consecutive points, giving them a fleeting 91-89 advantage. However, the Grizzlies (8-12) countered with a 10-0 run that solidified their lead at 103-95. Coach Tyronn Lue acknowledged the need for his players to maintain their energy and focus throughout the game, stating, “Some guys can be running out of gas at times.”
Despite the loss, there were positive takeaways for the Clippers. Leonard led the team with a remarkable 39 points, including a late three-pointer that could have shifted the outcome. Harden added 23 points, seven rebounds, and ten assists, while Ivica Zubac contributed nine points and eleven rebounds.
The Clippers capitalized on the Grizzlies’ early shooting struggles, as Memphis shot just 17 for 44 in the first half, missing numerous close-range opportunities. Lue emphasized the importance of mental sharpness, noting, “Mentally, we gotta be better, gotta be sharper.”
In a poignant moment, the game also marked the return of former Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who received a video tribute in his first home game since announcing his retirement plans. Paul recorded five points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of play.
The Clippers will need to regroup and address their ongoing struggles if they hope to turn their season around. As they contemplate their next steps, the team has faced a difficult stretch, losing twelve of their last fourteen games.
