Massachusetts Police Prepare for “No Kings” Protests on October 18
Police across Massachusetts, including Boston, are implementing security measures for the upcoming “No Kings” protests scheduled for October 18, 2023. This movement serves as a **national day of action** aimed at addressing concerns about perceived authoritarianism and corruption under the former Trump administration. The protests began earlier this year, with significant demonstrations occurring on June 14, coinciding with Trump’s birthday and a military parade in Washington, D.C.
During the June protests, over **100 rallies** took place across Massachusetts, attracting a diverse group of participants. Individuals from various organizations, including the **Sisters of Saint Joseph**, the **American Legion**, and the **Mass Senior Action Council**, joined in solidarity. Ron Bucchino, a participant from Agawam, emphasized the movement’s longevity: “This is the end of the beginning. We are going to be out here for a long time. We are going to be out here for months. We are going to be out here for years.”
The upcoming events will be held in multiple locations throughout Massachusetts, including **Boston**, **Worcester**, **Springfield**, **Pittsfield**, **Greenfield**, and **Provincetown**. The times for these events vary, with some starting in the morning and others continuing into the night. Boston Mayor **Michelle Wu** is expected to speak at the Boston event, which features action tables for community engagement, creative resistance activities, and entertainment.
The organizers have outlined three primary calls to action: joining a community **ICE watch group**, boycotting corporations perceived to support Trump, and maintaining pressure on local representatives through calls, emails, and in-person visits. The organization emphasizes its commitment to nonviolent action and has instructed participants to avoid any civil disobedience during the protests. Attendees are also advised not to bring weapons of any kind, even those legally permitted.
Massachusetts State Police Colonel **Geoffrey D. Noble** stated that police have been preparing to understand the dynamics of the events and ensure a robust security plan is in place. “I am confident that we will have appropriate security measures to ensure that this is a peaceful event,” Noble remarked during a press conference. While he did not disclose specific details, he referred to a “layered security plan,” indicating that all police departments in the state would be prepared to respond as needed.
In light of the protests, the **American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)** has encouraged participants to familiarize themselves with their rights before attending. The ACLU’s website advises attendees to be prepared and knowledgeable about their rights while engaging in public demonstrations.
As the October 18 protests approach, both organizers and law enforcement are focusing on ensuring safety and maintaining the message of peaceful assembly that the “No Kings” movement represents.
