U.S. Congressmen Unite for Victory in Beer-Making Contest
Congressmen Josh Riley and Mike Lawler showcased an unlikely yet successful collaboration by winning the People’s Choice Award at the 8th Annual Brew Across America competition. The event, organized by Anheuser-Busch, took place on March 5, 2024, in Washington, D.C., bringing together lawmakers from various states to highlight bipartisan cooperation and domestic manufacturing.
Riley, a Democrat representing Ithaca, and Lawler, a Republican from Pearl River, crafted a special brew named the “Hudson Valley Harvest Lager.” This lager, flavored with local apple and maple syrup, was celebrated for its crisp taste and distinctive darker color. The beer was produced at Anheuser-Busch’s facility in Baldwinsville, New York, emphasizing the use of regional ingredients.
The brewing competition aims to foster collaboration among members of Congress, as evidenced by the participation of teams from states including North Carolina, Missouri, Arizona, California, and Wyoming. Brendan Whitworth, Anheuser-Busch’s chief executive officer, remarked, “The American beer industry creates jobs, supports farmers, and strengthens our communities – right here in the U.S.” He highlighted the importance of lawmakers coming together to celebrate the industry, which sustains approximately 2.4 million American jobs.
In a statement, Riley expressed pride in their brew, stating, “When you mix New York apples, New York maple syrup, and a healthy dose of bipartisanship, you can craft a beer celebrating our state’s best qualities.” He emphasized that the competition was about unity and connection among participants and the public.
Lawler echoed this sentiment, stating, “My brewing partner, Congressman Josh Riley, and I can both agree that the best American beers are made right here in New York.” He noted that their collaboration not only produced a great beer but also exemplified the spirit of bipartisan cooperation.
The event also included a significant announcement from Anheuser-Busch, which awarded $25,000 to the Manufacturing Institute’s Heroes MAKE America initiative. This program is dedicated to assisting veterans in transitioning to careers in manufacturing and aims to strengthen the U.S. workforce for the future.
Through this unique competition, Riley and Lawler have not only raised a toast to collaboration but have also highlighted the important role that local agriculture and industry play in supporting American communities.
